Fascial Hands-On Therapy

I'm particularly fascinated by the body's fascial system and view it as an important element in addressing and resolving pain and mobility challenges. I also believe that focusing on the fascial system can help stimulate the body's innate healing processes, ultimately impacting overall health and well-being.

So what is fascia?

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that resembles a thin, white web wrapped around and connecting all the different parts of your body. It's a bit like a spiderweb but made of a gel like substance, that supports and holds everything together. Imagine it surrounding your muscles, organs, and even individual cells, providing protection, support and structure throughout your body.

Disclaimer: this is not a photo of fascia. Instead its a photo of a spider web, just like in my analogy. Hopefully it helps in your visualisation of the topic.

Why is Fascia Important

Fascia is essential for the body's movements, supporting everything from walking to more complex activities. It maintains posture, protects muscles and organs, provides structural support, and allows muscles to work together smoothly. Additionally, it supports cell to cell communication throughout the body and helps the nerves send message to the brain so that you can sense and respond to the world around you. Furthermore, fascia plays a role in transporting nutrients and removing waste in your body. It's super important!

Fascia and Hydration

Fascia is like a sponge. When it's well hydrated its flexible and allows movement. When it's dried out it becomes stiff and tight, causing discomfort and pain.

Imagine fascia as a sponge. When well-hydrated, it's flexible, easily moving and stretching. However, when dehydrated, it becomes stiff and tight, causing discomfort, limited mobility, and pain. Dehydration can affect nutrient exchange in your cells and alter sensory input and communication, impacting your response rate, coordination, movement efficiency, and overall body awareness.

How to keep your fascia hydrated

Keeping your fascia hydrated is important for your overall health. No one wants to feel like a dried-out sponge! One way to maintain hydration is by drinking water regularly throughout the day. It's better to take small sips frequently than to drink a large amount all at once, as this helps with absorption. Eating hydrating foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can also help maintain fascial hydration. Additionally, engaging in gentle exercises like walking or pilates can improve blood flow, which is beneficial for keeping your fascia hydrated. Finally, you could consider having some fascial hands-on therapy at Optimise Massage Therapies!

Fascial Hands-On Therapy at Optimise Massage Therapies involves applying gentle pressure and lengthening techniques to the fascia. This helps improve blood flow, move fluids around, and release any tightness or stiffness.

What Is Fascial Hands-On Therapy?

The fascial hands-on therapy that I use involves using my hands to apply gentle pressure and lengthening techniques to the fascia. This helps improve blood flow, move fluids around, and release any tightness or stiffness. It's like giving your body's web of tissues a nice, gentle stretch and massage to keep it flexible and healthy!

Benefits of Fascial Hands- On Massage Therapy

Here are some of the incredible advantages fascial therapy offers:

🚶‍♀️ Improved Flexibility: Release the Stiffness! 🚶

Do you ever feel like you're wearing clothes that don't fit quite right? Or like you're wrapped up too tightly and can't move freely? This feeling can be linked to dehydrated fascia. As we age, our fascia can become tighter, which can limit our flexibility. Fascial therapy can help loosen up this tightness, enhancing flexibility and range of motion.

💧 Enhanced Fluidity and Circulation: Fascial therapy is highly effective in reducing adhesions and promoting flow throughout the body. By gently manipulating the fascia, it restores fluidity to areas that were once compressed and stuck together. This process enhances internal flow within your body, thereby boosting circulation and lymphatic flow, and promoting the body's natural healing mechanisms. Improved internal flow also allows cells to receive oxygen and nutrients more efficiently while effectively removing waste. Additionally, this enhanced flow improves nerve communication, resulting in better and faster movement.

🩹 Pain Relief: Many people experience aches and pains due to tight fascia which contains sensory nerves. Fascial therapy can help alleviate this discomfort, providing relief and improving quality of life.

👣 Better Posture: Fascial therapy can help realign the fascia, which can improve posture and reduce the risk of falls, a common concern for older adults.

🏃 Enhanced Mobility: Maintaining mobility is crucial, especially as we age. Fascial therapy can help keep your body moving smoothly, reducing stiffness and improving overall mobility. Additionally, it can support better sensory motor control and help you maintain your balance.

😌 Stress Reduction: Life can be stressful. Fascial therapy's gentle, hands-on approach can promote relaxation and reduce stress, benefiting both body and mind. My clients always comment on how relaxed and free they feel at the end of a session.

Give it a Go!

If you have been in pain or have had restricted mobility for longer than you would like to accept, I encourage you to make a booking. It doesn't matter how long it has been there. You will know from the first appointment whether my techniques will provide you with help that you have been seeking. Plus as an extra bonus, your treatment will provide you with some precious 'me time' to relax and unwind from your busy life. Win Win!

Scar Tissue Therapy

If you have a scar from a past surgery or accident, you may have noticed that the area around it just doesn't feel right. You may for example, experience numbness or a pulling sensation in the general area. Maybe you have a visible marker that concerns you or perhaps you don’t even look at that area as it just doesn’t feel part of your body anymore.

Scar Tissue Therapy uses light and gentle techniques to facilitate the integration of a scar with the rest of the body. It can reduce stress responses in the nervous system (e.g. pain, burning feelings, tingling, itching), increase vascular and lymphatic flow, improve mobility by addressing fascial restrictions, restore function and sensation in the area and even minimise the aesthetic impact of the scar.

Scar Tissue Therapy can be used on all types of scars - including those created by C-section, hysterectomy, spinal surgery, skin cancer removal (including facial), knee reconstructions, shoulder replacements, burns, and more!

This type of therapy can be life changing and is suitable for scars of all ages from 8 weeks of age - even scars that are 20+ years old. If you would like to discuss this style of treatment, please feel free to contact me on  0481 575 228  or by emailing me kylie@optimisemassage.com.au. Alternatively, you can select a day and time and  book an appointment online.
